Wasps & Wasp Extermination

Wasps are social insects, and believe it or not they aren't looking to try to sting someone, with maybe one exception which I'll get to. Wasps are perfectly happy just minding their own business, yes, even the red wasp. Most wasps are paper wasps, building their nests out of several materials that have been chemically altered (by enzymes) to resemble paper, and sometimes it is paper. Some are decent pollinators, and some rarely pollinate.  If you see a red wasp nest you'll be fine unless there's one on the nest that just has a bad attitude. That one may get you but the rest won't move. It'll hurt a bit though. We also have tarantula hawks and cicada killers in this area but you'll most likely never see them, they have no interest in humans. 

The two species that should be noted is the red wasp, if they make a nest in your attic, and the yellow jacket. If red wasps make a nest in your attic it could be very large, and they will sometimes get through the vents and in to your home. They aren't trying to hurt you, they're just curious but that could end up in a sting or two. The yellow jacket (technically any wasp with yellow and black bands are yellow jackets), but here I'm talking about the southern and european yellow jacket. They make their nests in the ground, usually, but will sometimes make them up high just like any other paper wasp. They'll also make them in walls. Nevertheless, they have a bad attitude, you don't have to annoy them to have them sting you, they're always aggravated.and they don't just send one or two out to sting you, it's usually dozens or more. It's the only stinging insect that has put me in the hospital (briefly). A single yellow jacket sting is a little painful, but 50+ becomes unbearable. I was wearing a bee suit and they somehow got through, luckily I'm not allergic...but the pain caused my blood pressure to rise to an unsafe level. That particular instance made them my 3rd most disliked insect behind bed bugs and roaches. I think for good reason.
